ISTANBUL CARRIER MUSEUM

Known as the Kariye Museum, it is a church structure dedicated to Christ, which forms the center of the Khora monastery, a large building complex during the period of the Eastern Roman Empire. The name "Khora", which means "rural" or "out-of-town" in Greek, was accepted due to the fact that it was located outside the walls of Constantinos.

Although the exact construction date of the building is not known, according to the narrative of the saint Symeon Metaphrastes, who lived in the late 10th century, St. Babylas, who was martyred with his 84 disciples in Nicomedia (İznik) in the early stages of Christianity in 298, was buried here. It is understood that the region where the Khora monastery is located has gained importance as a necropol.

During the conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by Fatih Sultan Mehmet (1451-1481), the structure suffered no damage. Khora Monastery Church which continued to be used as a church for a long time, Sultan II. In the Beyazid period (1481 bir1512), it was converted into a mosque by the Grand Vizier Hadim Ali Pasha (Atik Ali Pasha) in 1511 and added a madrasa. In the Turkish period, monastery structures outside the church were destroyed and collapsed over time.
